This enrichment class will cover roughly a book per month. We want children to love reading and literature and so this will be a fun class of stories and projects.
Every week in class we will read aloud parts of the book. Then students will be encouraged to read a few chapters at home, but if they can’t get it done we will do a recap the next week in class to catch them up so the class has an understanding of what has taken place throughout the novel. Throughout the semester we will have class discussions about the character, setting, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution, theme, and genre. Then we will work on fun projects related to the books. We will be reading books like “Numbering the Stars” by Lois Lowry, “Holes” by Louis Sachar, “Island of the Blue Dolphins” by Scott O’Dell, and “The Witch of Blackbird Pond” by Elizabeth George Speare
We will also focus on learning how to write about what we’re reading in an incremental approach where we will eventually end up with a longer piece of writing, hopefully even an essay by the end of the semester. Every student will be allowed to write at his or her own level and we will brainstorm together as a class discussion. We will be studying some basics about the process of writing, from outlining to a complete paragraph or essay. Although students will be mentored through the process of writing and literature analysis all grading and assessment of course content will be evaluated at home, this is an enrichment class; therefore the course instructor assigns no grades.
Throughout the work, there will be fun games and projects to keep learning a fun adventure!
