ScienceJunior GeologistsThe students will become junior geologists as they explore the world of the Earth’s crust, rocks, minerals, and landforms. Our junior geologists investigate the layers of the earth, their properties, and how and why they formed. Students then learn the difference between rocks and minerals. They learn how the three main types of rocks are formed and how they change over time in a process called the rock cycle. Students sort samples of common rocks according to their type. They learn special characteristics of each, and become familiar with specimens of Earth’s most common rocks. Students spend several weeks studying minerals, learning what makes a mineral a mineral, procedures for testing mineral properties, identifying a variety of minerals through experimentation and testing, and studying minerals with microscopes. Students will learn the five characteristics of a mineral. They will then use these characteristics to determine whether different specimens are minerals or not.Thu9:30am-10:50amQuest in Science09/05/2401/16/251616 weeks8080 minutes per class09/05 - 01/1609:30 AM - 10:50 AM09 - 129,10,11,12$499 (Includes all registration fees and materials)$23/hr; $31/wk; $125/moCClosedScience coursesVisit our staff page for instructor bios: https://learnbeyondthebook.com/our-team/

MathSemester classHigh School Geometry (year-long course)In this yearlong class we will focus on understanding plane and space relationships. One thing that many students find they like is that geometry is less abstract and more visual than algebra - easier to see what is going on in the problems. For some of this class we will focus on what people usually picture when they think of geometry: topics like area, perimeter and volume, measuring angles, and using triangles to find the heights of tree and buildings. You know, stuff you can use in the real world out there. About 2/3 of the class covers problems that are not designed to necessarily be directly usable in the real world, but are instead exercises so students can explore and practice the process of solving problems in general. We will spend a significant amount of time on proofs and logic, which helps students consider how we know the things we know, and how to build on knowledge we've learned before .Thu11:00am-12:20pmRachel Dang09/05/2401/16/251616 weeks8080 minutes per class09/05 - 01/1611:00 AM - 12:20 PM14 & up14,15,16,17,18$499 (Includes all registration fees and materials)$23/hr; $31/wk; $125/moCClosedVisit our staff page for instructor bios: https://learnbeyondthebook.com/our-team/
ScienceMiddle School Earth Science"In this course, students will become young Earth Scientists as they explore and investigate the Earth, what it is made up of, how the land was formed, and how it is constantly changing. We investigate the layers of the earth and learn how to read maps using scales and legends. Students will observe and manipulate a large variety of igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks. We will observe where rocks come from, where they go, what rocks are made of, and how to classify rocks according to their properties. Students will use a sediment cylinder and observe how sediment is deposited into layers. Using sand, shells, and rocks, students make their own sedimentary rock. Students will dissolve and create crystals and observe different crystal shapes in various rocks. They will learn the different ways that fossils can form and create their own simulated fossil. Students will study volcanos and earthquakes, and how both change our Earth. They will examine how water, wind&ice affect rocks etcThu11:00am-12:20pmQuest in Science09/05/2401/16/251616 weeks8080 minutes per class09/05 - 01/1611:00 AM - 12:20 PM12 & up12,13,14,15,16,17,18$499 (Includes all registration fees and materials)$23/hr; $31/wk; $125/moCClosedScience coursesVisit our staff page for instructor bios: https://learnbeyondthebook.com/our-team/
MathHigh School Algebra 1 (year-long course)This is a year-long class. We will start with a review of all operations with integers. We will then move into combining like terms, and writing & solving 1-step, 2-step and multi-step equations and inequalities, and absolute value inequalities. We will spend some time with the rules of exponents, including negative exponents. We will perform all operations with polynomials. We will be spending some time with linear equations and systems of equations and their graphs before moving onto all operations with rational expressions and equations, radical expressions and equations, and quadratic equations & functions. Of course, we would never leave out uniform motion problems cause if two trains leave the station travelling at different speeds, you need to know how long it will take them to be at the same place!
