Junior Geologist - NorthridgeMonQuest in Science09/09 - 01/1309:30 AM - 10:50 AM09 - 12CThe students will become junior geologists as they explore the world of the Earth’s crust, rocks, minerals, and landforms. Our junior geologists investigate the layers of the earth, their properties, and how and why they formed. Students then learn the difference between rocks and minerals. They learn how the three main types of rocks are formed and how they change over time in a process called the rock cycle. Students sort samples of common rocks according to their type. They learn special characteristics of each, and become familiar with specimens of Earth’s most common rocks. Students spend several weeks studying minerals, learning what makes a mineral a mineral, procedures for testing mineral properties, identifying a variety of minerals through experimentation and testing, and studying minerals with microscopes. Students will learn the five characteristics of a mineral. They will then use these characteristics to determine whether different specimens are minerals or not.Visit our staff page for instructor bios: https://learnbeyondthebook.com/our-team/Closed$499 (Includes all registration fees and materials)15 weeks80 minutes per class9:30am-10:50am09/09/2401/13/2515809,10,11,12$25/hr; $33/wk; $133/moScience coursesScience

High School Geometry (year-long course)WedRachel Dang09/04 - 01/1501:00 PM - 02:20 PM14 & upCIn this yearlong class we will focus on understanding plane and space relationships. One thing that many students find they like is that geometry is less abstract and more visual than algebra - easier to see what is going on in the problems. For some of this class we will focus on what people usually picture when they think of geometry: topics like area, perimeter and volume, measuring angles, and using triangles to find the heights of tree and buildings. You know, stuff you can use in the real world out there. About 2/3 of the class covers problems that are not designed to necessarily be directly usable in the real world, but are instead exercises so students can explore and practice the process of solving problems in general. We will spend a significant amount of time on proofs and logic, which helps students consider how we know the things we know, and how to build on knowledge we've learned before .Visit our staff page for instructor bios: https://learnbeyondthebook.com/our-team/Closed$499 (Includes all registration fees and materials)16 weeks80 minutes per class1:00pm-2:20pm09/04/2401/15/251680Semester class14,15,16,17,18$23/hr; $31/wk; $125/moMath

Eureka! The Story of Your Home State - California: History, Geography, and ArtThuLynn Hayes09/05 - 01/1611:00 AM - 12:20 PM07 - 11CPerhaps you have studied Ancient Greece, Rome and Egypt, but how well do you know the history of your home state? California is unique in American history in terms of its varied geography, and its diversity, economic energy, and rapid growth. Students learn the physical and human geographic features that define places and regions in California. Key historical moments we explore include the Gold Rush, the granting of statehood, the first transcontinental railroad, the 1906 earthquake, the birth of motion pictures and how California became an agricultural and industrial power. We examine the works of pop art creator Wayne Thiebaud, abstract artist Richard Diebenkorn, landscape painter Richard Mayhew, assemblage artist Betye Saar, and filmmaker Charlie Chaplin, and then students have the opportunity to create their own artwork inspired by these masters.
