This enrichment class will cover roughly a book per month. We want children to love reading and literature and so this will be a fun class of stories and projects. We are going to be reading books such as Phantom Tollbooth and Where the Red Fern Grows. Every week in class we will read aloud parts of the book, then students will be encouraged to read a few chapters at home, but if they can’t get it done, we will do a recap the next week in class to catch them up to where we will start that week. We will have class discussions about the stories, learning about plots, characters, and stories. Then we will work on fun projects related to the books. We will also focus on learning how to write about what we’re reading in an incremental approach where we will eventually end up with a longer piece of writing, hopefully even an essay by the end of the semester. Every student will be allowed to write at their own level and we will brainstorm together as a class. We will be studying some basics about the process of writing, from outlining to a complete paragraph or essay and all the steps in between.
