Phonics and Reading Comprehension, Level 2 & 3 (for new and continuing students)

This class takes the approach that spelling and word analysis are inextricably intertwined with reading fluency and comprehension.  A child’s specific word knowledge—including a knowledge of phonology, semantics, and syntax—works to bolster fluent reading and rapid comprehension.  As such, students will engage in “focused contrasts” of words using the hands-on sorting and matching activities provided in the Words Their Way phonics program.  This means that students will be studying and categorizing words by spelling features and reflecting on what they notice, ultimately leading them to discover the logic behind the system of the English language as they become confident readers.

Level 2 readers must have mastered beginning alphabetic principles of letter/sound correspondence for all letters.  These students will begin by focusing on consonant blends and digraphs, and move on to long vowel constructions and other vowel patterns, using appropriate decodable reading practice booklets along the way.

Level 3 students are those who have a foundation with what we refer to as “Within Word Pattern” concepts and are ready to continue their analysis of multi-syllabic words, accented and unaccented syllables, and affixes.

Readers will be assessed during the first week of class to determine their best placement within our course of study.  Each level will work with me and then independently during the first half of each class; during the latter part of the class, we will read and discuss engaging literature and apply newly acquired phonetic and semantic concepts to the material we read for a deeper level of comprehension.  Games and activities will be incorporated for a fun and engaging experience!
