This class is a combination of reading literature and exploring the art of creative writing.
The class will involve reading the “The Giver” by acclaimed author Lois Lowry. This 1994 Newbery Medal winner has become one of the most influential novels of our time, and centers on the haunting life of a twelve-year-old boy named Jonas, who lives in a seemingly ideal, if colorless, world of conformity and contentment. Not until he is given his life assignment as the Receiver of Memory does he begin to understand the dark, complex secrets behind his fragile community. Students will engage in literary analysis and comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, and themed projects that enhance the lessons of this timeless story.
The class will also be devoted to the art and exploration of creative writing. Learners will engage in various forms of writing to create short stories, poems, comic strips, etc. to demonstrate various forms of storytelling that use the fundamentals of writing to promote connection and self-expression.
Please bring a copy of “The Giver” by Lois Lowry to our very first class. Students will need to bring the book with them to every class. Thank you.
