Introduction to Philosophy

Why do you believe what you believe? How do you prove you are real? Why do we exist? Though difficult to answer, it is questions like these that separate humans from the cosmos, as we seek to understand life and its meaning, the world and its causes. This course invites students to examine what they believe, and test it with logic, experience, and the tools of philosophers who have come before us.

This course will use the book Sophie’s World, a hybrid of introductory philosophy and science fiction. As 14 year old Sophie attempts to solve a troubling secret in her town, she uses historical philosophy from a mysterious correspondent. But the truth begins to be more complicated than she ever imagined. With this book as a springboard, students will use knowledge of classic philosophy to attempt to reach the answers before Sophie does—and simultaneously forge their own knowledge.
