What does genre mean? It’s simply, ” a group of films having recognizable similar plots, character types, settings, filmic techniques, and themes. In this semester-long class, we will introduce early films and modern films from the comedy, documentary, western, animation, independent film, musical and adventure genres. We will go back to the days of early cinema from “the king of comedy”, Charlie Chaplin all the way to present day animation films. We will screen the films in class and have discussions in the following class. The only homework will be some take-home reading as well as watching assigned films at home. Part of the discussion classes will require the student to write a few notes, thoughts or ideas and bring them to class. No long papers or essays.
