History and Literary Analysis through William Shakespeare’s Henry V

“For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother”

(King Henry, Act 4 Scene 3)

This class is focused on the reading and in-depth study of William Shakespeare’s rousing history play, Henry V. Through discussion, literary games and some written assignments, we will learn how to analyze a work of literature by identifying the key elements of character, setting, plot and theme. We will also investigate the historical context in which the play was written and in which the events of the play take place. We will have opportunities to explore our own creative writing, through drafting a modern day interpretation of scenes from Henry V, and even try to pen our own poetry in the iambic pentameter style that Shakespeare perfected!
