This class will bring to life the subject of Geometry, even for younger children.  We will explore the beauty in Geometry.  We will cover upper elementary, middle school, and even some high school Geometry concepts, but in a simplified manner appropriate for their age. We will be learning how to determine area, perimeter, circumference, and measuring (or inferring the measurements of) angles (within and between shapes). The class will primarily cover parallelograms, triangles, and circles. However we will also touch on more complicated shapes like pentagons, hexagons, octagons, and irregular shapes of all kinds.  So much to explore!

We will use inquiry-based projects that will help them begin to understand the concept of “proofs” in Geometry, even at a younger age. Strong fine motor skills will be essential as we work with a compass to create shapes and explore the beauty of Geometry and combine it with art. All those strong fine motor skills children have been developing throughout the years, will be essential as we work with a compass. A foundation in basic mathematical operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) for whole numbers will be helpful as we explore and measure things.   Some reading will be done from String, Straight-edge, and Shadow (a Waldorf-inspired text) and we will talk about the history and uses of Geometry.
