This is definitely not mommy’s yoga practice! This class is different from anything you have in mind when thinking of a yoga class but will still contain all of the amazing benefits that yoga and mindfulness has to offer. Children derive enormous benefit from yoga and mindfulness practice, it enhances their ability to focus and learn, teaches them to focus on the present moment, brings them awareness of others and their surroundings, gives them tools to help navigate the sea of emotions, as well as the physical aspects of flexibility, strength, coordination, and body awareness. In addition, their concentration, stress relief abilities, and sense of calmness improves, allowing them to absorb and learn more.
It is important to understand, children are not little adults. They have different needs, respond to different stimuli, and learn in different ways. With this in mind, the From Ten to Zen, kids yoga and mindfulness class is designed to be a fun, invigorating, interactive, and imaginative journey for your child into their own developing mind, body, and spirit to make a connection between themselves and the outer world.
Through the use of themes, yoga poses, games, music, books, art, imagination, and other props, we will transform the traditional yoga practice into a creative, stimulating, and fun yoga and mindfulness experience. These kid-specific practices of exercise, play, critical thinking, and imagination, will empower and encourage your child to be strong, self-confident, mindful of their bodies, health, surroundings, and healthfully connect their mind, body, and spirit to everything they do and the choices they make.
Studies show that yoga and mindfulness, at an early age, encourages self-esteem, cognitive awareness, and body awareness along with fostering cooperation and compassion, within children, in any setting. It is my belief that providing children with these tools paired with guiding them in developing an empowering mindset helps them to fully participate, with their parents, in learning, understanding, and creating their own paths to overall good health and wellness!
How Yoga & Mindfulness Benefits More Effective Learning:
- Chronic stress inhibits learning. Restful yogic practices, such as corpse pose (relaxation) and pranayama (breath techniques), can invoke the relaxation responses in the autonomic nervous system, allowing learning to progress more effectively
- Postures such as eagle pose and twisting triangle are cross-median movements that help to coordinate communication between the right and left hemispheres of the brain. This can aid in improved reading and spelling skills
- Balance poses improve concentration and focus.
- Mindfulness helps to alleviate unhelpful negative emotions and stress that hinder memory function. Increase resilience and decrease reaction time.
