In this course, students will survey the ancient Egyptian religion and its mythology, not only learning about ancient gods and goddesses but also the social and historical contexts of this religion. Together, we will read a variety of ancient texts such as the Book of the Dead, Pyramid texts, and hymns, then we will critically discuss their ancient (and sometimes modern!) cultural significance. Students will learn critical thinking skills, presenting skills, research skills, and gain a deep understanding of ancient Egyptian religion and mythology. Among the occasional creative or factual writing assignment, students will also present or create art pieces themed around the topic of each class.
