Algebra 1 (condensed in a semester)

This is a year-long class, condensed into 1 semester for those who are trying to get ahead and finish Algebra 1 by the summer. Students have to attend both sessions (Monday & Thursday).

We will start with a review of all operations with integers.  We will then move into combining like terms, and writing & solving 1-step, 2-step and multi-step equations and inequalities, and absolute value inequalities.  We will spend some time with the rules of exponents, including negative exponents.  We will perform all operations with polynomials.  We will be spending some time with linear equations and systems of equations and their graphs before moving onto all operations with rational expressions and equations, radical expressions and equations, and quadratic equations & functions.  Of course, we would never leave out uniform motion problems cause if two trains leave the station travelling at different speeds, you need to know how long it will take them to be at the same place!

We will use the following textbook, which can be purchased used:
Holt McDougal Algebra 1 Common Core edition 2012

The class will also be lined up with the textbooks used by charter schools so students can receive A-G approved high school credit for the course.  We act like tutors for them helping them through the book.

Teacher: Kirk Watanabe

Cost: $550

Ages: Ability-based

Prerequisites:

For the algebra 1 class students must be able to work with integers ( add, subtract, multiply, and divide), and how to work with fractions  & decimals (add, subtract, multiply, divine and reduce).  They should also be comfortable with using variables in math (in simple equations).  So, basically if they have completed Pre-Algebra, they should be good for this class.  All these things will be reviewed the first few weeks, but there will not be a lot of time spent on them.

If you would like an idea of whether your child should be in Pre-Algebra or Algebra 1, please do this assessment and let me know their score and which numbers they had incorrect and I can let you know what would be most appropriate for their level:
